Are Mattress Toppers Good for Hip Discomfort?

Are Mattress Toppers Good for Hip Discomfort?

Sleep will always be considered one of the most important aspects of our lives. It is how our bodies recharge, reset and most importantly, recover.

Mattress toppers come in a range of different shapes and sizes, and have been known to alleviate tension and discomfort in both back and hip issues.

Today, Warming Technology Innovators, Dreamland, will cover how mattress toppers can be used to aid in hip discomfort.

How hip discomfort can affect day-to-day living

As you may be aware, hip discomfort can really put a crimp on plans and general movement. Simple movements, such as walking, stretching or sitting up in a chair, can become laboured and stressed.

If continuous, hip discomfort can begin to affect multiple parts of your day, including work or hobbies, which may even affect your mental health, as your productivity and social life are interrupted.

If you are currently suffering from issues related to your back, please read our guide on how mattress toppers are good for back tension.

Mattress Topper vs Mattress

One of the greatest advantages of a good mattress topper is its pricing compared to its standard mattress counterpart.

An average mattress within the UK can cost around £600, with a premium mattress costing in excess of £1,000, which can make them hard to justify in the current economy.

Comparing this to a high-quality mattress topper, these can start from as little as £99.

Breakdown: What can you do?

Although there are many options out there when it comes to mattress toppers, some of the most important questions need to be answered by you. Only you know how firm you like your mattress and what type of support will help you the best.

If some of the questions below are relatively difficult to answer, or you think your current firmness or support is affecting your hip, back or neck, it may be worth reviewing your current set-up to see if that may help your current problem.

Evaluate Firmness

One of the most well-known differentiations when it comes to mattress toppers or mattresses is their firmness, and luckily for us, it has its own scale.

The range of firmness goes from 1 to 10, with a soft mattress being between 1 and 4, medium-to-firm mattresses being 5-7, and firm mattresses being 7+.

Soft mattresses can be described as all-consuming, as when sat on one, you will feel minimal resistance around you, covering yourself in a soft mattress. A firmer mattress will be resistant and leave you lying on top of it rather than consuming you.

Consider Support

When dealing with an ache or tension, it may be worth evaluating the current support you are receiving from your own bed. Is the discomfort in your hip being elevated when you are resting?

If the answer is no, or a slight yes, it would be good to review all aspects of your current bed set-up. Is the mattress topper thick enough? Is it too firm or not firm enough? Are synthetic materials affecting the quality of your support?

All of these questions should be reviewed and answered so you can come to the best decision for you.

Investigate Partner’s Domino Effect

When you are asleep, there can be a whole range of things that may affect your quality of sleep or your recovery from a hard day's work. One of these effects can actually have nothing to do with the mattress or mattress topper at all!

If your sleep partner has been known to move or fidget in bed, it could be causing movements within the mattress that are affecting your solitary positioning, causing sharp movements that could deliver further tension or discomfort.

It may be worth discussing this potential issue with your partner and finding some sort of remedy until the hip discomfort has reduced.

Picking your next Mattress Topper: Discomfort in mind

With all this in mind, picking your next mattress topper can be imperative in aiding hip discomfort. Choosing the material is important, but additional features such as heating elements are just as important as well.

Please read our additional breakdown describing some of the materials you can find in different types of mattress toppers.

Memory Foam

Memory foam is typically designed to help distribute weight evenly, which has been known to help with discomfort, but results do vary when it comes to the individual experience. Memory foam mattresses and toppers have also been known to cause further discomfort, so it may be worth that you do your research before your next purchase.

Feathers

Although a feather mattress topper might sound like the perfect remedy for your hip discomfort, this material may not give you the correct support you need. Issues with hip discomfort can stem from a mattress or topper that does not offer you the right support, which connects back to the firmness scale we discussed earlier.

Typically, feather mattress toppers would be considered a soft type of mattress.

If you have a feather mattress topper or are considering giving one a go, it would be worth reviewing the above firmness scale and finding the right material that works for you.
